Cover Letter Vs Selection Criteria - What's the difference?

Job application requirements vary from listing to listing, so it is incredibly important to read the job advertisement thoroughly to understand what they are looking for. They are listed in many different ways, and knowing how to decipher which one you need will improve your chances of success.


Selection Criteria

Addressing selection criteria is typically more detailed and evidence-based. We recommend following S.T.A.R. formatting that follows the structure of Situation, Task, Action and Results. The employer will list specific requirements within the application, and you would be required to address these with suitable evidence and appropriate structure.


Cover Letter

A cover letter is typically an introductory letter that summarises your strengths and unique value that you can bring into the role. Highlight why you want this particular job, and why you are the right person for the job with examples from your career to back your claims to suitability.


When do you need a cover letter? Descriptors to look out for:

  • One page statement

  • Summary of experience

  • Cover letter

  • Introduction letter
